Majorities in Israel want Benjamin Netanyahu to resign as prime minister after the Gaza war, according to polls.

Tel Aviv – A year after taking office, the Israeli government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are under enormous pressure. The Israeli public's distrust of a wartime head of government is unprecedented, the newspaper said. Haaretz Friday (December 29).

According to polls, most Israelis want Netanyahu to step down once the war in Israel is over. Many accuse him of not taking personal responsibility for the October 7 Hamas massacre.

But even before the brutal terror attack, there were mass protests in Israel against Netanyahu and his coalition, which was inaugurated on December 29, 2022. The most right-wing government in Israel's history is pushing for the most controversial judicial reform. In the months leading up to the war, it was criticized as endangering Israel's security and unity.

Netanyahu's Controversial Judicial Reform in Israel: Judges' Tendencies Leaked – State Crisis Imminent

Israel's Supreme Court is expected to rule on the first major aspect of this judicial reform in mid-January. Israel's parliament in Jerusalem passed the first amendment to the law at the end of July despite massive public opposition. The aim is to deprive the Supreme Court of an opportunity to take action against “inappropriate” decisions by the government, the prime minister or individual ministers.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation leaked it a few days ago Channel 12 Draft Supreme Court Judgment. Accordingly, a majority of judges will declare the change in law invalid. Eight judges shall vote in favor of the relevant draft judgment and seven shall vote against. Never in Israel's history has a comparable law been struck down by the Supreme Court. If this happens and the government does not accept the decision, the country will face a national crisis.

Israel Polls: Gantz Leads – Shocking Thesis Spreads on Netanyahu's War Plans

Critics see the government's actions as a threat to Israel's democracy. Netanyahu's government argues that the court in Israel is too powerful and interferes too much in political issues. However, according to experts, the plans could play into Netanyahu's hands in the ongoing corruption investigation against him for some time. The case, which has been going on for more than three years, resumed in December after a break.

A year ago, former longtime prime minister Netanyahu returned to power after 18 months in opposition. In Israel's history, no one has held office longer than a 74-year-old man. After the landslide defeat on October 7, it is uncertain whether Netanyahu will be able to continue as head of government. Critics accuse him of tolerating or encouraging the rise of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

According to recent polls, Minister Benny Kantz's party will be the strongest faction in the War Cabinet. The Haaretz Netanyahu was already suspected of not ending the war in the Gaza Strip and wanted to stay in power as long as possible. (dpa/frs)
