The Russian army continues to advance in eastern Ukraine – with heavy losses. Kyiv gives current statistics of victims. An overview.
KYIV – Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than two years. The war in Ukraine has resulted in dramatic casualties – on both sides, including civilians.
Russia continues its offensive in the eastern part of Ukraine. Moscow reports further territorial gains. However, the Kremlin remains tight-lipped about its own losses in the “special military operation,” as the war is called in official Russian. On the other hand, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Defense Forces publishes daily statistics on Russian losses. However, this information cannot usually be independently verified.
Russian Losses in the Ukrainian War: An Overview
According to Ukrainian officials, about 1,040 Russian soldiers have died or been seriously injured in the past 24 hours. The number of victims since the start of the invasion now stands at 474,260. An overview of developments in the last few days:

Heavy losses in the Ukrainian war in terms of equipment
The Russian military’s losses of vehicles, aircraft and equipment are also high in the war against Ukraine. The following list is an excerpt from statistics currently reported by the Ukrainian military (as of May 6). Here again, the information cannot be independently verified. Previous day’s changes are in parentheses.

NATO announces assessment of statistics
As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced in Brussels on March 14, 2024, Western intelligence services estimate that the number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded has now exceeded 350,000. The country is paying too high a price for small land gains, he said. The Ukrainian attacks have sunk or disabled a significant part of the Russian Black Sea fleet, Stoltenberg added.
Western secret services with estimates of Russian losses in Ukraine war
As of December 2023, the US Secret Service put the number of soldiers killed or seriously injured in the war at around 315,000. This was reported from parliamentary sources in Washington, citing documents released by the services. This figure corresponds to 87 percent of the total strength of the Russian armed forces before the war.

In December 2023, Great Britain commented on the numbers. At the time, the British Ministry of Defense estimated that around 70,000 Russians had been killed in Moscow’s war of occupation. These were 50,000 regular soldiers and 20,000 members of Wagner’s private army. Casualties in London are estimated at 180,000 to 240,000 soldiers and 40,000 Wagner militia. (red)
