A cargo ship crashes into a bridge in southern China. The building partially collapsed and several vehicles fell into the water. At least two people died.

Pictures show a huge hole in a traffic bridge near the megacity of Guangzhou. Below – wedged between two pillars – an empty container ship. The bridge was damaged when it collided with a pillar while passing through the Pearl River Delta early in the morning. Why is not yet known.

The captain was reportedly arrested. Officials said the case is under investigation. State media reported that several vehicles, including a bus with a driver, were submerged in the water. Rescue and rescue personnel are on duty.

The bridge should be well protected

The bridge is closed to traffic and ships are diverted. According to reports, the bridge was supposed to be equipped with anti-collision protection for ships years ago – but the work has been postponed several times.

With nearly 130 million people, Guangdong is China's most populous region – and economically strong with many industries. Much of the People's Republic's trade passes through the Pearl River Delta, which also borders the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
