Beyond the war in Europe, gas is also struggling: Algeria is now threatening to cut off supplies. Spain will be affected. This is a regional conflict.

Algeria has threatened to cut off gas supplies to Spain due to a dispute with neighboring Morocco. The Energy Ministry in Algeria on Wednesday warned the government in Madrid against sending Algerian gas to other countries in violation of agreements. Spain had indicated that it could supply gas to Morocco.

Sonatrach, Algeria’s state energy company, will account for more than 40 percent of Spanish natural gas imports by 2021. Most of it flows through a 750 km deep Metcos deep water pipeline. Algeria also operated the Gas-Magreb-Europe Pipeline (GME) via Morocco.

The struggle for Western Sahara

However, Algeria suspended operations on the GME pipeline in November to cut off supplies to neighboring countries. Tensions between Algiers and Rabat have been high for months, especially due to the conflict in the Western Sahara. Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab has now said that his Spanish representative has told him that Madrid will authorize the reversal of the GME pipeline.

“The Algerian was awarded to Spain Natural gasWhose target is considered to be in breach of contractual obligations other than those provided for in the contracts, ”the Minister explained.
