Russian President Putin defines his country’s foreign policy in stark contrast to the West. It represents an “existential” threat to Moscow’s interests. Foreign Minister Lavrov identifies “acts of unfriendly countries” that necessitate restructuring.

Russia has adopted a new foreign policy strategy in which the West is declared an “existential” threat. President Vladimir Putin explained that the new strategy was necessitated by the current “upheavals on the international stage”. His foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, spoke of Moscow’s reaction to “the existential nature of threats to our country’s security and development by the actions of unfriendly countries.”

According to TASS, the 42-page opinion describes the contrast to the US in a particularly stark way. For Moscow, Washington’s course poses a huge risk to Russia’s security and peace and to the “equitable development of humanity as a whole.” Russia seeks to eliminate US hegemony and reduce its ability to abuse its economic position.
