The Tigers finish off their Opening Day roster by adding 2 veterans to their bullpen

street. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers round out their 2023 Opening Day roster.

Tigers manager AJ Hinch confirmed Wednesday that right-handed pitchers Garrett Hill, Mason Englert and Trey Wenginter and left-handed Chasen Sheriff will be joining a revamped bullpen.

Wingenter and Shreve were off-roster invitees this spring, so they should be added to the 40-man roster ahead of Thursday’s home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

The Tigers freed up one spot by giving up right-hander Ronnie Garcia. The team said that Garcia was off waivers and transferred to Triple-A Toledo.

The other spot could depend on the severity of the newly revealed injury to Beau Brieske’s right-hander. The club said he had experienced pain in his arm after a recent outing.

If Brieske is placed on the 60-day injured list, that would free up another spot. Otherwise, the Tigers would have to remove a player from their 40-man roster.

This is where things stand now:

Wingenter, who turns 29 in April, was selected by the Padres in the 17th round of the 2015 Auburn University draft. The Madison, Ala. , debuted in 2018 and quickly garnered attention for its swing-and-miss stuff. In 2018 and 2019, he struck out one in three batters with A mid-to-high 90s fastball and nearly impossible slider to hit.

Wenginter underwent Tommy John surgery prior to the start of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Padres kept him in place and Wingenter was seeking a comeback late in the season in 2021. But he injured his back while on a rehabilitation assignment and was sidelined again with surgery.

When he next takes the mound, it will be his first major league game in over three and a half years.

Shareef, 32, spent last season with the New York Mets, posting a 6.49 ERA in 26 1/3 innings of work.

He’s played parts of nine seasons with five major league teams, including four years with the New York Yankees from 2015-2018.

The Las Vegas native was selected in the 11th round of the 2010 draft by the Atlanta Braves. He’s 21-12 with a 3.87 ERA in 311 career innings pitched, all of them out.

Shreve hit 10 in every eight innings of work this spring, earning him a spot as the second left-hander in the pen alongside Tyler Alexander.

The Tigers lost four key relievers from last year’s pen — Andrew Chafin, Michael Fulmer, Joe Jimenez and Gregory Soto — and this year’s unit has a few innings set.

“The games these people are in, how many rounds they go to, what their specific use is, it’s a work in progress, as always,” Hinch said. “The better your offer, the further you get… As I’ve seen over the past couple of years, I’m not afraid of ever using anyone, and that will continue.”
