In the lead-up to the game’s release last Friday, online conversation around the latest PlayStation title “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” focused not only on strong reviews but also on the game’s runtime.

The average completion time for the game’s main story across many players appears to be around 20 hours. Some took a slightly shorter time while most went longer, and those aiming for 100% completion added more hours on top of that.

This is on par with the original game’s 2018 release on PS4, and in line with several major single-player games. However, 2023 has been an unusual year with a number of major titles getting extra generous runtimes from “Zelda Part II” to “Baldur’s Gate III” and “Starfield.”

Thus, a debate ensued about the value of the game. Talking to BBCInsomniac Games director Bryan Intihar acknowledges the costs to people playing games, and says they’ve focused on making a game that players will find worth the price rather than stuffing things with unnecessary fluff:

“For us, it’s really about the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to achieve. Obviously there’s a certain level of ‘Hey, someone’s going to spend this kind of money on a game,’ so we want to give them the experience that’s worth it. Our mission is to make sure That you feel, no matter how long, that it’s worth the money, worth the investment.

Despite some complaints, this is not expected to affect the sequel’s sales – nor the reviews, which are higher than its predecessor’s. The 2018 game became the best-selling PlayStation exclusive in history, and the much shorter “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” continues to be a big seller for the company.
