According to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the African Union will be accepted as a member of the G20. At the start of the summit in New Delhi, Modi said a group of leading industrialized and developing countries had agreed to this.

During his opening address at the start of the summit in New Delhi, Modi invited the union, represented by its president Azali Azomani, to sit as a permanent member at the table of G-20 leaders and governments. Modi himself proposed the move in June.

“We welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 and strongly believe that the African Union’s accession will make a significant contribution to addressing the global challenges of our time,” said a draft summit declaration obtained by Reuters. The European Union is currently the only regional organization with full membership. So far, the AU is only an “invited international organization”.
