Spider-Man 2 developer weighs game length versus price

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released today, with a story that developer Insomniac said will take, on average, about 15 hours to complete if you stick only to the main story missions. If players decide to delve deeper and complete side quests and collectibles, playtime can extend to around 40 hours.

When it first appeared that Spider-Man 2’s main story could be completed in a relatively short amount of time – especially when compared to the likes of this year’s Baldur’s Gate 3, which could take players literal days to complete – some felt that Insomniac was asking a high price for Its sequel. Here in the UK, Spider-Man 2 is priced at £69.99 PS5 Standard Edition. If players want to upgrade to the Digital Deluxe Edition, it will cost them £79.99.

Many have argued that the length of the game should influence the retail price of the product, and thus Spider-Man 2 should be priced under £70. Insomniac’s creative director, Bryan Intihar, commented on this, saying that Spider-Man 2 is “absolutely worth it.”

He said in rebuke BBC Newsbeat Insomniac was aware of the controversy over the price and duration of the game, but for the Spider-Man 2 team it was all about the quality of the final product.

“For us, it’s really about the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to achieve,” he said. “Obviously there’s a certain level of saying, ‘Hey, someone’s going to spend this kind of money on a game,’ so we want to give them the experience that’s worth it.”

Intihar concluded by saying that “no matter how long” an Insomniac game is, it’s the developer’s job to make sure it’s “worth this money, worth this investment.”

As a general point of interest, Mary from our team of guides is currently on the final story mission, and has logged about 17 hours so far. You weren’t looking for collectibles or doing any side quests. She is also properly fond of the game.

In the meantime, don’t worry if you zip through Spider-Man 2 faster than you expected. Insomniac said there will be more upcoming content, including a New Game Plus mode, in the future.

According to Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, James Stephenson, the developer hopes to have this particular mode ready and out “before the end of the year.” We’ll update you when we hear more.
