TAMPA, FL – “Changes have to be made,” said Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVeigh after his team scored just 13 points in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“Adjustments have to be made,” McVeigh said. “We can’t go on like this. And how does that look, I don’t necessarily have the exact answers right now.”
McVeigh wanted to make it clear that he wasn’t pointing the finger at others nor including himself, saying, “I’m a big part of this. I have to do better.”
“We’ll be staying in touch throughout this,” McVeigh said. “But we have to be able to look inside and see what some of the solutions, the changes, the tweaks, the different things we have to do so that we can get different results and a different production from our attack.”
The 3-5 Rams, third in the NFC West, have scored 131 points this season. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, at this point last season, Los Angeles had scored 245 points. The 131 points were tied for second place by the reigning champions in the Super Bowl era.
McVeigh said he believes “everything should be up for discussion”.
“As coaches, we’re responsible for identifying problems and trying to provide solutions, and then it’s the player’s job to be able to implement and be able to get it done,” McVeigh said. “I have to be able to do my part first and foremost so they can do theirs. That’s where you always look. You want to look inside first.”
Ramez Receiver cooper cupwho had eight catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, said he agreed with McVeigh’s assessment.
“I’m not going to sit here and say I got the answers, but I agree,” Cope said. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over. We’ve come up with a way to alter and make points. You just need to find a way to put the points on the board. The defense did a great job and we took them down.
“We keep saying ‘come back and get to work.’ And it’s not a lack of effort, but at some point how much effort can you put in? You have to change something. You have to find a way to be efficient and score points.”
Despite only scoring 13 points, the Rams were in a position to win the match, four points ahead of less than two minutes on the clock. Los Angeles could not get the first goal and had to bet, giving the Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady Ball with 44 seconds remaining. Brady threw a touch pass to take the lead with 13 seconds left.
“This is very frustrating,” Cobb said. “It makes you kind of sick to your stomach. Knowing the guys on defense, what they did. Preparation, all the work that goes into it. You get a chance to win three plays, three yards and three yards. And we couldn’t make anything.”
The Rams is the eighth Super Bowl champion defending under .500 through eight games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. None of the seven teams preceding the playoffs had bounced.
“We need to play better,” quarterback Matthew Stafford He said. “I think from a player’s perspective, that’s what you can do. Just show up every day, try to be better than you were the day before and keep piling on those days. And I think that’s the only way to deal with it. If you just sit there and start looking around and trying Grabbing straws and doing all that sort of thing to figure something out, I don’t know if that’s the right approach.
“I think the right approach is to look inward, and try to figure out how each individual can be better. And if you do that, good things will happen.”
