War in Ukraine: President Scholz invites Beijing to hold talks with Ukraine

Updated as of March 24, 5:30 PM: President Olaf Scholz expects the leadership in Beijing to hold talks with Ukraine after the Sino-Russian summit in Moscow. “However, what we naturally find is that one should not only talk with the Russian president (but) with the Ukrainian,” the SPD politician said after the EU summit in Brussels. He reiterated that he believes the basis for a just peace in Ukraine is the withdrawal of Russian troops. “That is at least clear to me and should be addressed in the public debate.”

Chinese President and Party Leader Xi Jinping met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Tuesday to discuss the war and expanding strategic partnership between the two countries. Ahead of Xi’s visit, Scholz reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in support of the Chinese president. The president again warned China on Friday against supplying arms to the Russian armed forces. He said it was a terrible mistake. However, so far, no such deliveries have been observed.

War in Ukraine: Kiev insists on reclaiming Crimea

Report from March 24: Moscow/Kiev – Volodymyr Zelenskyj has the point clear. Negotiations on the Ukraine war are possible only if Russian troops leave all occupied territories, including Crimea. The Ukrainian president repeatedly swears to his comrades that Crimea should become Ukrainian again.

“This is our country,” he insisted, for example, on the day of protest against the Russian occupation of Crimea (February 26). Once Crimea is brought back, peace will return to Ukraine. Zelensky has now categorically rejected talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, the question now arises as to whether Ukraine can maintain this claim. Apparently, the US is now moving away from the position that Russia must vacate all of Ukraine before peace can prevail.

A future without Crimea? Negotiations on Ukraine’s borders with the United States are thought-provoking

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has not ruled out long-term negotiations on Ukraine’s future borders. He believes there are “areas in Ukraine where Ukrainians are determined to fight on the ground,” he told a parliamentary committee in Washington, DC on Thursday (March 23).

According to observers, Blinken reports that Washington considers it impossible to recapture all Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. After all, Ukraine’s recapture of Crimea seems illusory to the US.

Blinken, however, pointed out that the decision on this rests only with the people of Ukraine. Any peace agreement must be “just and durable”. According to Blinken, Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity must be preserved. “But how it is specifically defined in the territory, we are waiting for the Ukrainians to tell us.”

The US has previously opposed negotiations: it will never recognize the annexation of Crimea

However, the US seems to be gradually changing its stance on the issue. According to the US government, the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory was considered a precondition for possible peace talks. Russia’s annexation of the peninsula is not recognized and never will be, Ned Price announced in late February. “Crimea is part of Ukraine,” a US State Department spokesman said at the time.

However, losing Crimea is unthinkable for Russia. Political scientist Gerhard Mangat saw this In an interview Merkur.de Here is the Russian president in a situation like Zelenskyy. “The recapture of Crimea would mean Putin’s downfall, which he is determined to prevent,” Mangat said. “I will not rule out Putin using tactical nuclear weapons if Crimea is threatened.” (cs)
