Last week’s announcement that the 2023 Billboard Music Awards would be held on Sunday, November 19, raised some eyebrows because that was the exact date for the 2023 American Music Awards. Both music awards shows are produced by Dick Clark Productions.

The date for the 2023 AMA has not been announced and it turns out, so it was not a grid. The AMA has been a staple of ABC; The show was created by Dick Clark in 1973 for the network when ABC’s contract to broadcast the Grammy Awards expired. I heard that ABC’s most recent deal for the AMA ended with its telecast in November, and no decision has been made on contract renewal.

“We have offers from both networks and broadcasters,” a DCP spokesperson said in a statement.

Aside from the brand’s Grammy Awards, the AMAs have been some of the most reliable performers even though networks have been rethinking their commitment to the awards show amid declining linear viewership.

NBC has chosen not to continue with the Billboard Music Awards as it is focused on growing its People’s Choice Awards franchise, which recently announced a music spin-off, The People’s Choice Awards, which will debut in September.

Similarly, CBS dropped the ACM Awards in 2021 to focus on the company-owned CMT Music Awards, while the DCP-produced ACM Awards moved to Prime Video. The SAG Awards are now available on Netflix after a long stint on TNT/TBS, while this year’s Indie Spirits Awards aired online without a network.

DCP is scouting 2023 homes for the Billboard Music Awards, Golden Globes — and now the AMAs.
