PM Kurdi speaks out on terrorism after police officer killed in northern Kosovo Tensions have worsened this year among the ethnic Serb majority.
A police officer has been killed in a shootout in northern Kosovo. Another officer was wounded, the government in Pristina said.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurdi described the incident as terrorism. “The attackers were masked and heavily armed professionals,” Kurdi wrote on Facebook.
Details of the shooting or the motives of the perpetrators were not initially known.
The Serbian minority does not recognize the government
Although 90 percent of Kosovo’s population is ethnic Albanian, northern Kosovo has a majority of Serbs. Ethnic Serbs do not recognize the government in Pristina in the state of Kosovo, which gained independence from Serbia in 2008.
The conflict has intensified this year and has already led to violent riots. In May, 50 ethnic Serbs and 90 NATO soldiers were injured. NATO has deployed around 4,000 troops to help keep peace in the Balkans.
