Nord Stream investigators found traces of explosives on the boat Politics

During investigations into the explosions at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, investigators said traces of explosives were found on the suspect boat.

“Traces of underwater explosives were found in samples taken from the boat during the investigation,” said a joint letter written by German UN Ambassador Antje Leendertse and the ambassadors of Denmark and Sweden to the UN Security Council in New York.

The letter said it was suspected that the sailboat was used to carry explosives used in pipeline sabotage. The representatives of the three countries insisted to the UN Council that the investigations were taking place.

“The identity of the perpetrators and their motives cannot be reliably clarified at this time, particularly as to whether this incident was controlled by a state or a state actor.”

On September 26, 2022, explosions were initially recorded near the Danish island of Bornholm, and a short time later leaks were discovered in three of the four pipelines. The operator of Nord Stream 1 later spoke of meter-deep sinkholes and widespread debris on the seabed.

Nord Stream 1 and 2 each run from Russia to Germany as an underwater twin strand about 1200 kilometers long. Nord Stream 1 has supplied a significant portion of imported gas to Europe since 2011.

In Germany, investigators are said to be focusing on a charter yacht that allegedly harbored a sabotage group. ARD, SWR and “Zeit” in March, according to investigators, a task force left Rostock.

So the tracks must also lead to Ukraine. According to the report, the boat was allegedly chartered by a Poland-based company owned by two Ukrainians.

There has also been talk of ferry stops at Veek in RĂ¼gen and the Danish island of Kristiansand, northeast of Bornholm. According to later media reports, it was the ship “Andromeda” that was donated by a landowner on Rugen Island.

It is unclear from the ambassadors’ letter whether traces of explosives were found during the “Andromeda” investigation.
