After the indictment in Georgia, former US President Trump again wanted to promote the story of large-scale election fraud on Monday. His lawyers seem to have advised against him. They want to postpone another process in Washington.

Former US President Donald Trump has canceled his Monday press conference in Georgia.

Trump wrote on the site he co-founded, Truth Social, that his lawyers will use evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election in the US state in court. “So, the press conference is no longer necessary!” It’s unclear if the Republican Party is planning another event instead.

Trump’s lawyers stepped in

According to American broadcaster ABC, Trump’s lawyers advised him to cancel the press conference so as not to weaken his legal position.

Trump was indicted in Georgia earlier this week in connection with attempted voter fraud. A jury ruled that he should stand trial for his efforts to influence the outcome of the presidential election there nearly three years ago. 18 more people have been charged against him. In response, Trump announced a press conference and said he wanted to expose alleged election fraud in Georgia.

Three years later, there is no evidence of voter fraud

Trump has yet to concede his defeat in the 2020 presidential election and continues to spread the lie that election fraud robbed him of his victory over Democrat Joe Biden.

Dozens of his campaign’s lawsuits have been dismissed by election courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court, for lack of evidence. According to broadcaster ABC, Trump’s lawyers have warned the now 77-year-old that his planned press conference will only add to his legal problems.

INVESTIGATION OF THREATS AGAINST GRAND JURY

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials in Georgia are investigating alleged threats against the grand jury that voted to indict Trump earlier this week. Officers will “quickly respond to any credible threat and ensure the safety of those who have performed their civic duty,” the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to media regulator Media Matters, some websites make “direct threats” and refer to them as “hit lists”. In many US courts, the identity of the jury is kept confidential. On the other hand, in the US state of Georgia, names are made public at the end of the indictment.

Trump’s lawyers want the Washington hearing postponed

Trump’s lawyers want to postpone the start of another trial in Washington, involving attempted election interference, to April 2026. According to a court filing just filed by Trump’s attorneys, the delay was justified because of the “vast amount” of information gathered by federal prosecutors. They have indexed more than 11.5 million pages.

Prosecutors, led by special counsel Jack Smith, aim to begin the trial on January 2, 2024. The decision now rests with federal Judge Tanya Sudkan, who is expected to set a tentative date at a hearing scheduled for Aug. 28. +
