Normally everyone in the subway is busy with themselves – but at this sight everyone was paying close attention.
Extraordinary scenes on the London Tube: Hundreds of people ditched their pants – and boarded the subway without them – on Sunday. They participated in a show called “No Trouser Tube Ride”.
Participants met at the “Elizabeth Line” station, named after Queen Elizabeth († 96) and running across the city. They then split up and drove through the English metropolis in small groups.
Some wore shirts, jackets and ties as if they were going to the office. But everything was different below: the participants streamed onto the platforms and escalators in sometimes thrilling sandals.
Others celebrated the event in their own way by fully dressing up. Always with you: A pair of slinky, colorful underwear.
Why all this? The strange activity in New York began 20 years ago. It was organized by Improv Everywhere, a comedy group. The aim was to put a “smile on the face of passengers”.
It worked in England too! Londoners were interested in the campaign and took lots of photos of the colorful underwear.
More than 60 cities around the world are now participating in the grassroots campaign, including Tokyo, Toronto, Lisbon and Berlin. “No Pants Tube Ride” in 2020.
