“Seeds for next war” – UN report on Gaza ceasefire US Blocks Security Council
The United Arab Emirates brought the UN resolution for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. The US failed due to the Security Council. Great Britain did not vote. More on Live Ticker.
DThe United States used its veto in the UN Security Council to prevent agreement on a demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The other 13 members voted in New York on Friday for a draft resolution introduced by the United Arab Emirates. Great Britain abstained from voting. In a rare move, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres formally warned the 15-member council of a global threat posed by the two-month-old war.
The US protects its ally Israel with its veto. Both say they reject a ceasefire because it would only benefit radical Islamist Hamas. Instead, the United States advocated cessation of hostilities. Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the United Nations, said the draft resolution was a rushed, unbalanced text “that has no connection to reality and fails to deliver concrete progress on the ground”. A cease-fire would “sow the seeds for the next war,” Wood said.
The US called for significant changes to the draft, including condemnation of the October 7 Hamas attacks that killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages, according to Israel.
British UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said her country did not vote because it did not condemn Hamas. Israel must deal with the threat posed by Hamas.
Following this, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen made serious accusations against Antonio Guterres. In an X-Post he accused the Palestinians of supporting Hamas. By calling before the UN Security Council for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, he aligned himself with the terror group. The call was “an insult to his office and an indictment of the UN”.
