The skiing day ends dramatically on Christmas Eve in Tyrol. Suddenly an avalanche erupts. A 16-year-old boy was swept away by ice in front of his brother.

Hintertux – Two holidaymakers from Germany were at the Eggalm ski area in Hintertux in Tyrol (Austria). Austrian police said on Sunday (December 24) the duo rode down the slope several times. But around 1:10 pm there was an avalanche in this area. A 16-year-old boy was hit by a snowboard and buried. His brother managed to dig him out of the snow.

According to the police, the youths were stationed above a ravine in the area of ​​“Nasse Ducs Bach” (alternative to “Red Piste 77A”, 1,900 meters above sea level). When one of the brothers ventured into the valley, he triggered an avalanche and was trapped and partially buried in the mass of ice.

His twin brother managed to dig him out. A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured and was rescued by the “Alpin 5” emergency medical helicopter using a rope and taken to Swaz District Hospital. Police said he suffered a fractured femur and broken ribs.

Apart from Germany, a 64-year-old German was also trapped in the avalanche. The man was on a protected piste, but the snowboard had landed partially on this ski area. He fell, but was not injured, police said.

The Austrian ski tourist (46) has been missing since Saturday. Another tourist spotted ski tracks in the snow below the avalanche cone and alerted the mountain rescue team. Large-scale searches initially failed. Meanwhile, a chair accident during a storm in South Tyrol sparks debate. (ml)
