The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has announced its decision to call for a boycott of filming in the Maldives amid rising tensions between India and the island nation. Condemning recent statements made by Maldives ministers regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Film Industry Workers Union has appealed to its members and others to join the ban with them. The official statement read: “In view of the growing row between India and Maldives over the offensive statement issued by three Maldivian ministers, FWICE which is the oldest and largest federal body for workers, technicians and artistes working in the media and entertainment industry, strongly condemns the irresponsible and ridiculous statements made by It has Maldives ministers against the globally respected Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. In solidarity with the nation and its vast culture, FWICE members have decided to boycott the Maldives over their filming locations. The decision came days after some prominent figures from the Maldives mocked India and the intention of its Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the Indian islands.
