In a burgundy red velvet dress by Birgit Hallstein Couture with a wide scoop neckline, long sleeves and a floor-length train, the princess looked like she had long been queen. This gown may be familiar to some as it is the sixth time Mary has worn the gala dress with minor changes to the New Year tradition.

The History of Crown Princess Mary's Favorite Dress

Crown Princess Mary first wore Birgit Hallstein's dress in January 2007 at the age of 34, when she attended a New Year's Eve party at Amalienborg Palace. A month later, Mary wore the dress with Prince Edward, 59, then Earl of Wessex, at Norway's King Harald's (86) 70th birthday celebrations in Oslo.

Five years later, Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik attended a New Year's Day and New Year's party at Christiansborg Palace.
