Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 downsized the classic RTS to the squad level, presenting its battles as a series of close-range skirmishes between at least six units on each side. If you missed the broader scope and diversity of factions in the original Dawn of War, the Codex Edition mod, which has just released version 3.0, is for you.
Its focus is on turning Dawn of War 2 into a “more immersive, accurate and realistic experience.” It increases the range of weapons, adds base building (although unlike the original Dawn of War, base building is not tied to research), increases population capacity, and adds new units, including super-heavy units like Imperial Knights and Gorkanauts. The zoom distance has also been adjusted so you can step back and see more of what's going on.
In addition to reworking existing factions with additional units, four new factions have been added: Necrons, T'au, Gray Knights, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The terrain has been upgraded, the UI has been reworked, and existing units have been rebalanced so that, for example, Eldar and Space Marines move faster.
It's a comprehensive overhaul. Since many of the changes bring Dawn of War 2 more in line with the remastered version of Dawn of War 1, which is still the best 40k game, I'm not sure I need this mod myself. If you're a fan of Dawn of War 2, this might be for you. To install the Codex Edition, you'll need to specifically own Dawn of War 2: Retribution, and you'll have to get it on Steam. You can download the Codex version from ModDB.
