An American sets a record for the longest female mullet in the world

Tammy Manes is officially in the front and celebrating in the back after the mullet, at 5ft 8in (about 173cm), was confirmed to be the world’s tallest female.

The last time the 58-year-old cut her hair at the back was on February 9, 1990, according to Guinness World Records.

“A lot of people notice it when I turn around, so most of the time it’s like they don’t realize how long my hair is until they look at my ass,” Manes said in a video released by Guinness World Records on Thursday. .

“It was the 80s and everyone had a rat’s tail,” she said, adding that she was first inspired to farm mullet after watching the music video for “Voices Carry” released on Til Tuesday.

“The girl had a rat’s tail, and I really wanted one of those,” Manes said.

After she first cut down the mullet in November 1989, the Tennessee native immediately regretted it and decided to grow it again the following year. Since then, she has never looked back.

Normally, Manise keeps her mullet braided, and when she rides her motorbike, she just “tuckes the tail” into her pocket.

One of her friends braids her manis hair once a week, and the mullet stays like this until you wash it again and dry it with paper towels, “otherwise it will stay wet most of the time,” she says.

Although mullet is usually associated with the 1980s, its history goes back centuries – even the Greek poet Homer, writing in the “Iliad” in the eighth century B.C., refers to spearmen with “cropped forelocks, and long hair at the back”.

For Manise, this has allowed people to get to know her even more than 20 years ago, and provided a topic of conversation among her friends and family.

Last year, she placed runner-up in the “Football” class at the 2022 American Bowl Championships and won the accompanying $300 prize, an experience that prompted her to apply for the Guinness Book of World Records.

After a lengthy process, which included having her hair photographed to show how long it was, Manise received a package on her front porch telling her the official record.

“When I opened it, I thought, ‘This is amazing,'” she said.
