“Agony” did not get the age-rating that the Madmind Studio was targeting at, hence the developer had to tone down the torture, violence, and nudity in the game by censoring them. Madmind, however, understands its market quite aptly, and it knows as to how they love the gore it assured when the survival horror was announced. So it is releasing a patch, which would disable the adult content censor post-launch.

Madmind Studio, on Saturday, published a Kickstarter update, which solves the issue of censorship in the game. In its letter to the supporters and fans of its crowdfunding campaign, the developer explained the amendments that it had to do and the special patch that would arrive at the PC version of its game.

Madmind wrote that in order to be able to publish the game, they had to make some compromises and without it, they would have had to delete the whole project and never release it. Further, Madmind added that with that in mind, they have spent a lot of time to make sure that censorship would not affect the perception of the game.

In accordance with Madmind, it has engaged in discussions with the age-rating companies just so that “Agony” could obtain an M (Mature) rating rather than an AO (Adult-Only) rating. The latter by the way implies that the game would not be fit for release on the Xbox One and PS4 consoles. In order to ensure that “Agony” would have an M rating, Madmind had to modify some adult content scenes by tweaking the camera frame.

At the present, the problem with the censorship is that it would not let the game to deliver the full experience that the fans are after. In order to address this problem, Madmind has decided to come up with a special, optional patch, which would disable the censorship in the game. Sadly, the patch would only arrive on the PC platform. The developer even wanted to get it to consoles, but it is not possible from a legal and technical point of view. As a result of which, Madmind now is encouraging the backers who bought the console version of “Agony” to switch to the PC version. It is extending a detailed guide on how to do the switch in an upcoming Kickstarter update.

Originally “Agony” was scheduled for release on 30th March 2018. However, Madmind was forced to delay it because of the rating issue. The developer is yet to announce the new release date.

“Agony” is a first-person, survival horror that is set in hell. According to the official description of the game- “You will begin your journey as a tormented soul within the depths of hell, without any memories of your past.” It further reads that the special ability for controlling the people on the path, and possessing simply minded demons, “gives you the necessary measures to survive in the extreme conditions you are in.” It reads, “By exploring the hostile environment and interacting with other weary souls of the hellscape, the hero will soon understand that there is only one way” in order to escape from the Hell, and that would need meeting the mystical Red Goddess.
