22 people have died in South Korea due to a heavy storm. 14 others are missing. Heavy rains for several days have caused floods and landslides in many places. Train services were largely suspended.

22 people have died in floods caused by heavy rains in South Korea. South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior has reported that 14 people are still missing. Casualties were also reported due to landslides and collapsed buildings.

Most of the dead were reported to be from North Gyeongsang Province. Officials expect the death toll to rise further.

More than 4,500 residents were brought to safety from the water masses. According to provincial officials, the evacuation order affected more than 7,000 people in total.

13 regions of the country have been affected

Heavy rain has been lashing many cities and districts in South Korea for three days. Heavy rains caused overnight landslides and temporary power outages in 13 parts of the country. In the central district of Gosan alone, thousands of residents were asked to leave their homes. Earlier, a nearby dam overflowed due to rains, flooding low-lying towns in the area.

A landslide hit the city of Yecheon hard. As elsewhere, helpers are busy searching for the injured and repairing the damage.

Train service stopped

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duk-soo has called on authorities to evacuate areas threatened by floods and landslides. He asked the army to help in rescue operations.

Regular train services have been suspended across South Korea. Only KTX high-speed trains should continue to operate. However, according to National Railways, there may be changes in the timetable.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in most parts of the country till Sunday. Due to the summer rains in South Korea, there are frequent floods.
