YouTube 1080p Premium debuts on Android

One of the latest new features for YouTube Premium subscribers is a new 1080p class with better bitrate, and Google is now testing this feature with some users on Android and Google TV.

Back in February, YouTube was seen testing a new “1080p Premium” tier that was exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. At the time, it was exclusive to the iPhone and Apple TV. In April, Google officially announced the feature, explaining that it delivered 1080p content at a higher bit rate and that, yes, it was exclusive to Apple devices, but would come to Android later.

Now, it looks like Google is testing more support.

With the YouTube Android TV OS app, the 1080p Premium category has been found to be straightforward for one Reddit user. The app, which will work on both Google TV and Android TV devices, displays “1080p Premium” along with the standard 1080p option with a brief explanation that it offers “enhanced bit rate.” Switching to this level will prompt users to upgrade to YouTube Premium if they haven’t already done so.

Beyond that, at least One user saw on Twitter 1080p Premium appears on your Motorola smartphone through the official Android app.

Many still mistake this new standard for 1080p as YouTube locks quality behind a paywall, but that simply isn’t true. Instead of making the existing quality paid for, this is a brand new quality tier for YouTube and is exclusive to Premium members. The current 1080p layer hasn’t changed, and it’s still free for everyone.

Notably, YouTube has been rolling out 1080p Premium extensively over the past several days to iOS users and users on the web.
