US commits to open borders in talks

DAccording to Mexico, the United States has promised to keep the border between the two countries open, despite several irregular crossings. “There is a lot of movement at the border, at the bridges,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told reporters Thursday. Do not close the border. “This agreement has been reached,” the Mexican president said. On Wednesday he received US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

10,000 illegal border crossings per day

US Border Patrol has reported about 10,000 irregular border crossings from Mexico each day in the past few weeks — more than twice the number before the coronavirus pandemic. Many of them are immigrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba, and Ecuador who came to the United States through Mexico to make a better life there.

Border policy is a particularly contentious issue in the United States and politically highly sensitive for President Joe Biden. Republicans accuse Democrats of allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country unfettered — and fueling fears that crime and drug problems will increase.
