The Dnieper River (Ukrainian: Днепро) is the largest waterway in Ukraine. It also passes through the Cherson region, the capital of the same name, which fought in the Ukrainian war. The river, which is several hundred meters wide, now fronts the Russian occupation zone.

All boat and ship travel in Cherson has already been banned. The order is aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and will remain in force until the expiry of martial law. Exceptions are made only for the armed forces of Ukraine and water security specialists.

Signs of Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kherson

Last November, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s troops cleared areas north of the Dnieper, including Cherson. They destroyed many bridges. Since then, there have been regular clashes between Ukrainian and Russian troops on islands in the lower reaches of the river.

According to information from the DPA news agency at the end of April, the southern bank of the Dnieper is still controlled by the Russians. However, there were reports of small-scale landing operations by Ukrainian soldiers on the south bank – prompting speculation that the Ukrainian military could advance across the river in its announced counteroffensive against Russia.
