Russia strikes Kiev and Lviv region from air – Polish airspace violation reported

Russia attacks Kiev and Lviv from the air at night

Russian air strikes hit Ukraine's capital Kiev and the western region of Lviv on Sunday night. Videos on social networks show explosions in the capital.

Ukrainian authorities have reported that Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, has been hit by Russian airstrikes. Attacks were also reported in the western part of the country, Lviv. According to Polish reports, Russia briefly violated the NATO member's airspace during the attack.

ROn Sunday night, Russia launched airstrikes on Ukraine's capital Kiev and the Lviv region in the west of the country. “Explosions in Capital. Air defense works. Do not leave shelters,” Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko wrote on the online Telegram service. The governor of the Lviv region, Maksim Kositsky, announced rocket attacks in the district around the city of Stryi, south of Lviv.

For its part, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (RSZ) announced that it had observed “intense activity of long-range aircraft from the Russian Federation” during the night, linked to attacks in Ukraine. At 4:23 a.m. on March 24, Polish airspace was violated by a cruise missile launched that night by a Russian long-range aircraft, the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces wrote on X Platform (formerly Twitter). Cities in western Ukraine are targets of the attack. The object entered Polish airspace near the town of Osertow and remained there for 39 seconds.

It was monitored by military radar systems throughout the aircraft. All necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace have been initiated. Among others, Polish and Allied air forces were activated.

The Polish military had already discovered a violation of its airspace by a Russian missile at the end of December. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw summoned the officials of the Russian embassy and gave him a note of protest. It asked Russia to “explain the incident of airspace violation and immediately stop such actions”.

Flight alert across Ukraine

According to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy, about 20 missiles and seven Iranian Shahed drones were launched into the region, targeting critical infrastructure.

An air alert has already been declared across Ukraine over Russian Tu-95MS fighter jets launching missiles. The alarm was raised about two hours later. In late December, Russia launched a wave of attacks on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities using Tu-95MS fighter jets. 39 people died then.

Ukraine's military said two large Russian landing craft used by the Black Sea Navy hit a communications center and other infrastructure during nighttime raids on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. A Russian-appointed official confirms that a major Ukrainian attack took place that night. Air defenses fired more than a dozen rockets at the Crimean port city of Sevastopol.

In recent weeks, Russia and Ukraine have increased mutual airstrikes. After two years of Russian aggression and ongoing bombings of Ukrainian cities, Ukraine has announced it will strike back and shift hostilities to Russian soil.

In response, Russia stepped up its own attacks. On Friday, Russia hit Ukraine's energy infrastructure with massive missile and drone strikes.
