The government in Kiev had long called for ATACMS missiles capable of hitting distant targets. Now America has provided them. Meanwhile, Russia’s biggest offensive in months began in eastern Ukraine.

DUkraine used long-range US ATACMS missiles for the first time in its fight against Russian invasion troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed this on Tuesday. The Rockets have “proved themselves,” Zelensky said. Several media outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, reported on it earlier.

ATACMS missiles, launched from the ground against ground targets, have a range of up to 300 kilometers, according to their manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. US newspapers reported, citing government officials familiar with the matter, that the delivered missiles were throttled models.

Kiev had long demanded a weapon system (English: Military Tactical Missile System). In the past, Zelenskyj has described the ATACMS as very important militarily, and the counterattack will not stop. However, there was concern in the US that targets in Russia could also be attacked. The U.S. government allegedly promised Zelensky ATACMS without making it public. If these missiles are confirmed to be supplied to Ukraine, pressure is likely to increase on the central government to supply Taurus cruise missiles. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholes (SPD) has so far ruled this out.

Ukrainian troops dealt a heavy blow to the Russian Air Force on Tuesday. Special forces destroyed nine Russian helicopters in overnight raids on two airfields in southern and eastern Ukraine, the military said on Tuesday. Military equipment, an air defense system, ammunition depots and runways were also hit. Dozens of Russians were wounded in the operation, known as Operation Libelle.

Ukraine has not explained how the airfields were attacked. The Russian side did not comment on this. According to Oleksiy Goncharenko, Member of Parliament of Ukraine ATACMS rockets were used here. Airports are located behind the front lines in Luhansk region and Berdyansk region. The Russian military thought they were safe from Ukrainian attacks.

“There are results,” says Zelensky

Most recently, Zelensky highlighted the successes of his troops in the fight against Russian occupiers. “There are results,” he said in a video statement on Tuesday, without elaborating. “We have a result in our progress, a result of our boys’ offensive actions, and that is a very important message for our country.”

Ukraine needs such results “every day, every week”. Every kilometer traveled and every security line crossed by the invaders counts. “The stability of our decisions means the stability of the world’s support for Ukraine.”

Earlier, the Ukrainian military leadership reported new territorial gains in the central Ukrainian district of Zaporizhia. Russian lines there were pushed back almost a kilometer. This information could not be independently verified.
