At least four migrants died in another boat accident off the coast of Tunisia, according to officials. So far, four bodies have been found on the beach in Sfax, Tunisia’s second-largest city, and three more people from the overturned boat are still missing, according to a spokesman for the Sfax court in charge of the investigation. Accordingly, 36 people were saved.

According to the spokesman, a boat with 37 migrants had already gone ashore earlier in the day. Since then, 20 migrants have gone missing and 17 have been rescued. The missing are from countries south of the Sahara.

The Tunisian coast guard prevented thousands from crossing

The Tunisian coastguard announced on Friday that between January 1 and March 31, more than 14,000 people were prevented from crossing to Europe. This is five times more than the same period last year. More than 13,100 immigrants came from countries south of the Sahara, and the rest were Tunisians. Most of the boats were intercepted off the coast of Sfax and Mahdia provinces. The coast is 150 kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa.
