The US Supreme Court has given a decisive victory to Donald Trump. But the former president's problems are far from over.

WASHINGTON DC — Former President Donald Trump is playing for time — and has won, at least temporarily. The US Supreme Court announced on Friday that the question of Trump's immunity cannot be resolved at this time. Special counsel Jack Smith had requested this from the nine justices on the US Supreme Court. But Smith lost and Trump can claim a legal victory.

The trial on the election fraud charges cannot now meet the scheduled early March date. Lawyer Smith accused Trump in Washington DC of trying to change the results of the 2020 US election. Trump's legal team, however, invoked their client's immunity, which he is entitled to due to his role as President of the United States. Smith had asked the Supreme Court to quickly clarify whether Trump can be sued at the federal level for his conduct after the election three years ago — or whether implied immunity applies in this case.

Donald Trump is scheduled to appear in court on January 6, 2021

It is based on the events of January 6, 2021. Supporters of Donald Trump attacked the Capitol in Washington DC, where the US House of Representatives is located. At that time, the US Parliament met to formally confirm the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the US election. Trump had earlier urged his supporters in a speech to march on Congress and “fight back.” As a result of the riots, five people died. Trump's defenders have argued that the former president cannot be legally prosecuted for actions that were part of his duties as head of state.

Donald Trump should be president again

For Trump, the ruling is a long-awaited victory in court. A number of civil and criminal cases are currently pending against the Republican Party. He has been accused of attempting to rig the election in four cases. This allegation was recently backed up by another tape recording of Trump. In this, the then president is said to have urged two Republicans not to verify the results of the US election in Michigan to prevent Biden's victory in the hotly contested swing state.

Donald still denies all the allegations. The 77-year-old politician is now running again in the US primaries. Trump is running as the Republican candidate for the 2024 US election. According to current polls for the Republican primaries, it looks like a rematch between Trump and Biden. (in)
