The light shifts strangely on a sunny day with faint clouds. When looking at the sun through special glasses, it becomes clear that the moon intersects its face, leaving it with a bright crescent like an orange piece.

There is an air of excitement but also a very civilized calm in the air – we are close to the total eclipse area but far enough away from regional hotspots like Niagara Falls so be very civilized.

I'm looking forward to an absolutely wonderful experience as the light fades further by the minute.

Bill Nelsona former astronaut and US senator who now serves as head of NASA, was just on the space agency's live broadcast of the eclipse today explaining why it's so important:

You have an alignment of the three orbs, and unique things happen when that happens. It has a profound effect here on Earth, in the middle of the day and suddenly it's completely dark.

We earthlings are not accustomed to that, little earthlings, all animals. But it is also an opportunity for us to study more. One of those celestial bodies, which is our star, the Sun, we can learn more about is that gas explosion that comes out of the core of the Sun.

We can see it better because we are not looking at the bright ball. You're suddenly looking at that corona, that mass of gases coming out of the edge of the sun.

Here's more about one of the scientific experiments NASA is conducting during today's solar eclipse. The space agency will launch three “probing” rockets from its flight facility in Wallops, Virginia, at intervals ranging from 45 minutes before and 45 minutes after the peak of the local eclipse.

The purpose is to collect data on how the sudden disappearance of the Sun affects the ionosphere and causes disturbances with the potential to interfere with communications on Earth.

They are the same three rockets that were recovered and refurbished from a similar experiment conducted by NASA during the annular solar eclipse last October.

The project is in partnership with Florida Embry Riddle Aviation universityResearchers will monitor information received from the rockets as they travel into the ionosphere, a region of Earth's atmosphere located 55 to 310 miles (90-500 kilometers) above the planet.

“It is an electrified area that reflects and refracts radio signals, and also affects satellite communications as the signals pass through,” he said. Show him BarjatyaEmbry-Riddle Professor of Engineering Physics and Director of the Laboratory for Space and Atmospheric Instruments.

“Understanding the ionosphere and developing models to help us predict disturbances are critical to ensuring that our increasingly communications-dependent world runs smoothly.”
