Israeli soldiers accidentally kill three hostages kidnapped by Hamas during clashes in the Gaza Strip. The army called it a “painful incident” and apologized to relatives.
Israeli soldiers accidentally kill three hostages in a fight against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. They were “unidentified as a threat” by soldiers during fighting in Shejaya, north of the coastal enclave, military spokesman Daniel Hagari said on television. “Then the soldiers shot at them and they were killed.”
The unfortunate incident took place on Friday morning. Hagari says it is still unclear how the three hostages ended up in the area where the fight took place. However, after an initial reconstruction of events, the military assumed that they had escaped from their captors or left on purpose.
“Army is responsible for everything”
The military identified two of those killed accidentally as Jotham Haim from Kibbutz Kafar Asa and Samar el-Talalka from Kibbutz Nir Am. The name of the third hostage who was killed will not be released at the request of his relatives. The bodies of those killed were brought to Israel.
“This is a sad and painful incident for all of us and the army must be held accountable for everything that happened,” Hagari continued. According to him, fighting has been going on in Shejaya city for the past few days. He expressed his condolences to the families of the hostages.
130 hostages are still believed to be in the hands of Hamas
On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel. Militants from the Palestinian Authority, designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, have infiltrated Israeli towns and villages and committed atrocities against civilians. According to Israeli reports, about 1,140 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage in the Gaza Strip. More than 130 of them are still in the hands of Hamas, according to Israeli sources.
In response to the Hamas attack, the Israeli military began bombing targets in the Gaza Strip and launched ground attacks. According to the Hamas-controlled health ministry, which cannot be independently verified, more than 18,700 people have been killed so far.
