He declared suicide in his diary
Investigating lawyer Frédéric Nahon told a press conference in Epinal that Lucas had mentioned in his diary that he wanted to take his own life.
When questioned, his family reported taunts and insults of a homophobic nature from students at his high school.
Lucas’ mother addressed the ongoing homophobia against her son at Parents’ Evening.
However, Lucas later indicated that things had been resolved, according to the school. At the second parent-teacher meeting at the end of the year, the mother and Lucas made it clear that the situation had improved and that Lucas was fine.
Money was raised online for Lucas’ funeral. “Our little angel has left us,” it says Crowdfunding-Platform. Lucas was buried last weekend, and 7,500 euros were donated.
Family loves attention
The 13-year-old’s family made a conscious decision to publicize the case to draw attention to the homophobic background and the ubiquitous bullying of gay, lesbian and queer people in French schools. The suicide caused a stir in France.
Education Minister Bob Ndiaye said on Twitter that he will work to stop all forms of bullying.
In 2019, in response to a surge in anti-queer violence, the French Ministry of Education launched a campaign against queerphobia in schools under the motto “tous égaux, tous alliés” (“All equal, all allies”).
