The NFL appears to be keen on having current and/or former players in football carrying the Olympics flag

A new kind of dream team may be coming.

When football makes its debut as an Olympic sport in 2028, NFL players could be among the participants.

Via Mark Musk of Washington PostNFL Executive Director Peter O’Reilly said in a news conference Tuesday that the league will work with the NFL Players Association and the various teams if current or former players want to sign up.

“We understand that desire,” O’Reilly said. “We think it’s a great opportunity because player interest is real and desirable“.

The league will certainly support the participation of current players, since the league recognizes that as interest and participation in football grows, interest in professional football will also increase.

Los Angeles’ matches open on July 14 and close on July 30. This is a favorable window, as it relates to the wider football calendar.

Retired veteran Rob Gronkowski said he would like to participate. He will be 39 years old at that time. Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill is also interested.

If current players are eligible, some key members of the potential team are still in high school.

And if many current and former players want to do so, the competition for a spot on the U.S. team could be far more fierce than the ultimate competition on the field with other nations.
