The Los Angeles Chargers announced the firing of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and quarterbacks coach Shane Day, Tuesday.
The changes were expected to lead to head coach Brandon Staley’s staff after a 10-7 season and a stunning loss Saturday in a wild card playoff game as the Chargers gave up a 27-point lead to lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-30.
The Chargers took a 27-0 lead in the second quarter but scored only three points in the remainder of the game.
Despite the ability of a quarterback Justin Herbertwho this season surpassed Andrew Luck for the most yards by a quarterback over his first three NFL seasons, the Bullets have always performed below par, especially in the red zone and running game.
The Chargers ranked 30th in the NFL, rushing an average of just 89.6 yards per game, and the unit ranked 17th in red zone efficiency, converting just 54.1% of their red zone drives into touchdowns.
Lombardi and Day, who also holds the title of passing game coordinator, were among the first hires Staley hired when he was named head coach in 2021.
