A note from her private secretary said that Queen Elizabeth II's final moments at Balmoral were “very peaceful” and painless.

Sir Edward Young wrote that she “slipped” in her sleep when she died and “was unaware of anything.”

Buckingham Palace said it would not comment on the “unauthorized” biography.

The book, which was published in the Daily Mail, states that the king was picking mushrooms nearby when his mother died.

According to the newspaper, the full text of Sir Edward's note about the Queen's death on September 8, 2022 says: “She was very quiet. As she slept. She slipped away. Old age. She would not have perceived anything. No pain.”

The document is understood to be in the Royal Archives and forms part of Mr Hardman's new book entitled Charles III: New King, New Court. The story from the inside.

The biography claims that a locked red box of papers containing two sealed letters was found on the late Queen's deathbed, one addressed to the then Prince Charles and the other to Sir Edward.

The Daily Mail said it was presented to the Royal Aide shortly after he wrote the memo, and also contained her selection of people who would receive the Order of Merit for “exceptionally meritorious service” across the Commonwealth.

The newspaper reported that the King and Queen Camilla spent an hour alone with her before her death, and that Princess Anne, a priest from a nearby church and the late Queen's wardrobe, took turns on her bed.

Regarding the king’s actions in those last hours, the Daily Mail reported that he called both of his sons and asked them to travel to Scotland as soon as possible to bid them farewell.

The Daily Mail reported that the king, who went out to collect mushrooms and clear his mind after seeing his mother, was told that she had died while he was driving his car back to Balmoral.

The biography says he stopped and was first addressed as “Your Majesty.”

Then, when the king called Prince William via Buckingham Palace's switchboard to tell him the news, he told the telephone operator on the other end of the line, “It's me,” after realizing he couldn't reveal that he was king yet.

The king tried to call his younger son to tell him personally as well, but Prince Harry was already traveling to Scotland and could not get through, the book reported.
