Terry Funk, one of the most famous professional wrestlers in history, has passed away at the age of 79.
Funk’s career spanned all the way from 1965 through 2017, with a 14-month reign as the NWA World Champion – at the time that was the unified national title between a number of territories – that began in 1975.
He was one of the pioneers of the “hardcore” style of wrestling and was universally considered an accomplished professional by wrestling fans and industry insiders.
His death was confirmed by his longtime close friend – rival and rotating partner – Mick Foley.
“I just spoke to Terry’s daughter, Brandi, who gave me the bad news,” Foley said chirp Wednesday.
“My mentor, my idol, was one of the closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I’ve ever seen. If you get the chance, find a match for Terry Funk or the Terry Funk promotion, and give thanks…”
Funk was the son of Texas wrestler and promoter Dory Funk, and began his professional career promoting his father’s Western State Sports, in Amarillo, Texas.
“WWE extends its condolences to Funk’s family, friends and fans,” the company said in a statement.
Funk has been working in all of Japan Pro Wrestling, WWE (then WWF), WCW and ECW.
“In my entire life, I’ve never met a man who works harder.” tweeted Ric Flairwho feuded with Funk and had the famous “I Quit” match with him at WCW Clash of Champions IX in 1989. “Terry Funk was a great wrestler, entertainer, incredibly brave, and a great friend! Knowing that no one will replace you in the world of professional wrestling!
Funk has also appeared in a number of films, including “Road House”, “Paradise Alley”, “The Ringer” and “Over the Top”.
Funk was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.
