Gilbert and developer Terrible Toybox have received criticism for the game’s art style, which fans have criticized for not matching original games released more than 30 years ago.
Gilbert previously said that “Back to Monkey Island may not be the art style you wanted or expected but it’s the art style you wanted.” He said the point of games was never to have pixel art but instead to use the latest technology and art to push the franchise forward, claiming that, even if it stuck with making Monkey Island 3, it wouldn’t look like previous games.
The game was first revealed in April and will arrive on PC and the Nintendo Switch sometime later this year, with other consoles currently unconfirmed.
