DSwedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was fined for not following police instructions at a protest in her home country. Swedish news agency TT reported from the courtroom in Malmö on Monday that he was fined 30 daily rates of 50 Swedish crowns (about 4.30 euros, or 129 euros in total) for defying state authority. He must pay 1,000 kroner (about 86.50 euros) to a fund to support victims of violence.
In June, Dünberg from Stockholm took part in several days of climate protest at Malmö’s oil port, which, among other things, prevented oil tankers from leaving the port. He reported on the protest on social networks and included a picture of himself in front of a truck, holding a sign that read “Jacque Blocker Tankpiler” (I block tankers).
In addition to Thunberg, four other activists were also charged, despite repeated requests from police officers to clear the street. “We don’t want to see, we want to physically stop fossil fuel infrastructure. We’re taking back the future,” Thunberg wrote on Instagram at the time.
At a hearing in Malmö District Court on Monday, the 20-year-old admitted taking part in the protest and ignoring police orders. However, he denied that it was a criminal offence. “Climate crisis” is an emergency, he replied, according to TD. However, the court refused to accept this argument. According to the report, a large number of Thunberg supporters gathered in front of the court.
Thunberg has been protesting since she was 15
As a 15-year-old, Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm during class on Fridays to demonstrate highly effective climate protection measures. Their weekly strike expanded within a few months into the global Friday Anti-Future movement. Thunberg ended her school strike in June as she graduated.
The young activist regularly criticizes governments in harsh terms for not doing enough to combat global warming.
