Paul Rudd fights ghosts in New York City

Upon hearing the theme song, the Ghostbusters are back!

Sony has released the trailer for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.”

“Afterlife” moves the ghost hunt to rural Oklahoma, but the upcoming fifth film in the series returns to its roots in New York City. In the trailer for “Frozen Empire,” an idyllic New York City summer turns to ice when a mysterious “death chill” takes hold of the city. Paul Rudd leads a group of Ghostbusters to fight the frozen enemy.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” premiered in November 2021 and was directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the original “Ghostbusters.” After a single mother takes her two children to a small town in Oklahoma, they discover their grandfather’s secret legacy and connection to the Ghostbusters.

“Afterlife” stars Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, who are all new to the series. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver also return to “Ghostbusters” in “Afterlife.” Jason Reitman penned the “Afterlife” reboot alongside Gale Keenan and Aykroyd, with Ivan Reitman producing.

Kenan is directing the upcoming film. Reitman teased the sequel’s production in an Instagram post at the iconic “Ghostbusters” firehouse standing next to Keenan in February, where “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” cinematographer Eric Steelberg snapped the photo.

“It is an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and stand behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” Keenan said in a statement when his appointment as director was announced. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid sitting in sixth grade at Mann Valley West that one day he was going to direct a ‘Ghostbusters’ movie.
