A pet cat that was hit by a train in Paris and died is causing a stir in France. Even France’s interior minister has now responded to the death of a cat named Nego.

DHis anger has not subsided in the case of Nego, a cat who was hit by a train in Paris. Now even French Interior Minister Gérald Dormanin has spoken out. He was shocked by the way the French railway company, SNCF, handled the horrific affair. The minister told French television broadcaster BFMTV that an investigation would reveal who was responsible.

A woman named Georgia and her 15-year-old daughter Melana – the cat escaped from its owners’ carrier bag at Montparnasse train station on January 2 and disappeared under a train. After twenty minutes of negotiating with the staff, as Melana told the animal welfare organization, “30 million friends,” they were unable to stop the train from leaving.

They were told it wasn’t their problem, it was a cat and they should have leashed her. The animal ran away when the train departed and, according to the owners, died instantly, they only saw the cat’s carcass, Melana explained to BFTMV.

The organization “30 million friends” meanwhile sued the SNCF for “gross misconduct and cruelty leading to the death of an animal”. If it goes to trial, it can be fined up to 75,000 euros and up to five years in prison.
