Honda is recalling a few hundred thousand Accord and HR-V models for 2023-2024 after vehicles were found to be missing part of the seat belt mechanism that protects occupants in the event of a crash.

The front seat belt pretensioners were installed without rivets during assembly, according to recall notices issued last week by Honda And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A seat belt pretensioner that does not have a rivet may not be able to properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a collision, According to the federal agency.

About 300,000 sedans and SUVs are subject to recall, but Honda estimates that no more than 1% of those cars actually suffer from the defect.

Owners can take their vehicles to the dealer for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the vehicle’s tensioners, free of charge. Honda says it will notify owners of affected vehicles directly by mail starting January 8.

From the first production date of the recalled vehicles in April 2022, through November 16, 2023, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Earlier this month, Honda recalled nearly 250,000 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect that could cause engines to stall while driving.
