Bjorner Moxnes, leader of the Norwegian Left Party, has resigned from his post. The 41-year-old politician was caught stealing a pair of sunglasses at Oslo Airport a month ago!

On June 16, a surveillance camera captured the theft: he was at a Hugo Boss store with his girlfriend when he tried to use a pair of sunglasses. Then he put the glasses in his travel bag. He then strolled through the store – and slipped a pair of sunglasses worth more than €100 into his left jacket pocket.

But a store detective stopped him from leaving the store, and Moxnes had to pay a fine. After surveillance footage of the crime became public, Moxnes called in sick in early July.

► On Monday — a day before he returned from sick leave — Moxnes admitted to the theft — and resigned from his position. He wrote on Facebook: “A lot of people have asked me how I could do something so stupid. I’ve been asking myself for the last few weeks. I don’t have an adequate explanation.

A day earlier, Norwegian Left Party executive Marie Snave Martinussen (37) decided to take over as leader. Moxnes held this position for eleven years.

Martinussen on Monday condemned both the theft and the way Moxnes handled the corruption, saying he did not provide “correct” information about the case from the start. He told a press conference: “I am angry and disappointed about this, and I said that to Bjorner in very direct and clear language.”

However, Martinussen’s case was “closed” after Moxnes apologized and resigned after the scandal. The 37-year-old will remain party leader until 2024.
