NATO plans massive deterrence maneuvers with 90,000 troops | Politics

NATO wants to show its teeth – and plans a major maneuver to deter Russia!

The Western defense alliance wants to mobilize around 90,000 soldiers. This means that this maneuver will be huge after the end of the Cold War. The German press agency reported learning of the maneuver on Thursday on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO's top military representatives in Brussels.

The exercise, which will begin in February, will be called “Resolute Guardian”. In particular, warning and positioning of national and international ground forces should be trained. The Bundeswehr will provide 12,000 soldiers, 3,000 vehicles and 30 aircraft.

According to information from the German Press Agency, the scenario of this exercise leads to the declaration of the so-called alliance case according to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.

The latter regulates the obligation to provide assistance in alliances and an armed attack against one or more allies is considered an attack against all.

The last major maneuver of this kind was in 1988

The largest NATO exercise to date since the end of the Cold War was organized in 2018 with a focus on Norway. Around 51,000 players are involved in “Triangular Meet 2018”.

The Bundeswehr deployed more than 8,000 soldiers to Norway for major maneuvers in 2018. This made Germany the second largest troop contributor after the United States.

Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the last NATO maneuvers larger than the exercise now planned took place. At that time, there were, among other things, a series of “Return of Troops to Germany” maneuvers. For example, in 1988, about 125,000 soldiers were involved.
