STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – Viewers across Northeast Ohio sent Fox 8 News photos of a large meteor seen Wednesday evening.

Conditions Wednesday night were ideal for those looking to the sky to see any meteors flying over Ohio and the region, said Northeast Ohio astronomer Jay Reynolds.

“No moon, clear skies, and late at night, perfect timing!” Reynolds said.

He added that you may have a chance to see a meteor if the skies clear later this weekend.

We are close to the peak of the Leonid meteor shower, Reynolds said.

“They (Leonides) can be very bright and we may continue to receive such reports until the end of this week,” he said.

While Fox 8’s forecast indicates cloudy skies Thursday night and Friday, the sky is expected to be clear Saturday night.

“You’ll need to wake up between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. if you want to increase your chances of catching a meteor or two,” Reynolds said.

He added: “The term meteor shower is somewhat misleading, because it is not actually a meteor shower, but rather just drops.” “Even during the best meteor showers, in urban areas, you may see as many as one to five meteors in less than 15 minutes,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds has some advice for the show.

“Go somewhere with open skies, such as a park or baseball field, with no lights in your direct field of vision. Be patient for 15 minutes without cell phone screens,” he said.
