“I’ve got his number ready to go.”

Watt spent a decade with the Texans before finishing his final two years with the Arizona Cardinals. He retired at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign. Houston already inducted the legendary pass rusher into the Ring of Honor last season.

Ryans was asked what circumstances he could envision where he could call Watt. The coach cleverly avoided answering the specific question.

“I need it now!” Ryan said while laughing. “I need to make that call now. Anytime JJ Watt is ready to go, I’m ready to go.”

The whole back and forth story is a nice one for May. And while no one doubted Watt’s ability to return after more than a year away, if the Texans needed the future Hall of Famer, things went horribly wrong.

Houston spent the offseason adding more to Ryans’ defense, including shelling out big money for Danielle Hunter and adding DeNico Autry inside. If Will Anderson takes the expected step forward in 2024 and Hunter stays healthy, the Texans’ pass rush should be dangerous.

The reality is that Ryans will spend the next eight months without really thinking about making that call with Watt. But it’s always good to know that a HOFer will take your call if a real “break glass emergency” situation arises.
