Less than two weeks after delivering a new medium-range missile, Iran has now delivered its own hypersonic missile. The state news agency said it could deal with all interceptor systems in the region.

Iran has delivered its own hypersonic missile for the first time. “Fattah” (Persian “Victory”) rocket was issued by the Air Force of the Revolutionary Guards. President Ibrahim Raisi also attended the event.

According to state news agency IRNA, the “Fattah” can reach a speed of 18,500 kilometers per hour and fly a distance of 1,400 kilometers. This will allow it to defeat any air defense system in the region. So far, this information has not been independently verified – no evidence has been provided that the rocket is actually powerful.

President Raisi said the missile would “strengthen the country” and “bring security and sustainable peace to countries in the region”. In November, Iran announced the development of a missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reacted with concern at the time.

The “Missile Defense Program” of the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which monitors the development of missiles and interceptor systems, points out that the term “hypersonic” can sometimes be misleading. Almost all missiles with a ballistic trajectory reach five times the speed of sound at some point in their flight.

Hypersonic missiles made headlines recently when the Russian military fired such missiles over Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly described its Kinsel missiles as uninterceptable.

However, in May, Ukraine announced for the first time that a “Kinzel” had been shot down with the help of Western “Patriot” anti-aircraft systems. The US also confirmed that the missile had been fired, but it was not clear at what speed the missile was actually flying at the time of launch. Russia denied shooting it down.

In another Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, Russia used six “Kinshal” planes, according to Ukrainian sources, but all of them were shot down by anti-aircraft guns.
