- Apple released iOS 17.2 earlier this week with a new Journal app and bug fixes
- But users claim that their iPhone battery life decreased after downloading it
It has only been available for a few days.
But it looks like Apple’s iOS 17.2 update is already hurting the battery life of many iPhones.
Several frustrated users took to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss the issue, with one claiming that they now have to charge their iPhone multiple times throughout the day.
“Since I updated my iPhone SE 2 iOS 17.2, the battery has been draining very quickly… it’s 16:37 now… and I’ve already plugged my iPhone in twice,” they wrote.
Here’s what you should do if you updated your iPhone to iOS 17.2 and noticed battery problems.
iOS 17.2 was released earlier this week, and is now available for iPhone and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.
The update introduces a brand-new tool called Journal, which Apple describes as “a way to reflect on life’s moments and preserve your memories.”
Furthermore, the release includes hotfixes and security updates for your iPhone.
Many eager iPhone users were quick to download it, but it seems that many are now regretting their decision.
“iOS 17.2 is killing my battery, I swear,” one user tweeted.
Another added: “iOS 17.2 drains the battery a lot.”
“Updated to iOS 17.2 and it drained my battery really fast,” one vented. ‘Just use it for 10 minutes to change my contact picture, and it drains from 99 to 91 very quickly.’
Fortunately, battery issues are unlikely to persist.
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, a researcher at ZDNet, explained: “Installing a new operating system on an iPhone causes a lot of things to run in the background, from indexing to battery recalibration, and this can last for hours or even days.
“Not only does this consume power, but recalibrating the battery can give the impression that the battery is draining more quickly when in reality it is not.”
“Add to this the dual factor of a lot of app updates happening after a new release, plus a lot of new features available that can put even more drain on an old phone.”
If you’re concerned about your iPhone’s battery and it’s been a few days since you updated to iOS 17.2, Kingsley-Hughes advises checking the battery’s health.
He added: “If you go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and the message says ‘this is good for peak performance’, then either it’s just normal things happening, or something is wrong.”
If you can run into potential battery issues, the iOS 17.2 update includes several exciting new features.
magazine
Journal is a brand new app where users can capture special moments and events in their lives and write about them.
Users can choose to upload written entries, as well as photos, videos, audio recordings or locations.
“We’re excited to bring the benefits of journaling to more people,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
“The Journal app makes it easy to preserve rich, powerful memories, and practice gratitude by intelligently organizing the user’s personal information, right from their iPhone.
“And we’re making it possible for other journaling apps to offer the same personalized suggestions while maintaining the highest level of privacy.”
start button
It’s been one of the most talked-about new features of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and now the action button is getting an exciting update.
Users can now set the button to quickly translate phrases during a conversation with someone in another language.
camera
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are also receiving an upgrade to the camera system.
“Spatial Video lets you capture video on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max so you can relive your memories in 3D on Apple Vision Pro,” Apple explained.
“The telephoto camera’s focus speed when shooting small and distant subjects is improved on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.”
Messages
The Messages app now features a follow arrow in the top-right corner, allowing you to quickly jump to the first unread message in a conversation.
Meanwhile, Apple’s cartoon Memoji feature has been updated, with the ability to modify body shape.
weather
The Weather app now displays precipitation amounts, while new tools let you choose from next-hour precipitation, daily forecasts, sunrise and sunset times, and current conditions like air quality, gusts, and wind speed.
The new interactive Moon Calendar also lets you know what phase of the Moon we are in on any day of the following month.
Improvements and bug fixes
Apart from the new features, the update also contains several improvements and bug fixes.
AirDrop has been improved, allowing you to share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other eligible cards by pairing two iPhones together.
Meanwhile, Autofill has been improved, allowing you to fill in the names and addresses of your contacts in PDF files and other forms.
While Apple doesn’t reveal specific bug fixes, it adds that iOS 17.2 “fixes an issue that may prevent wireless charging in some vehicles.”
