In Pictures: Battle of Pakmut

Russia announced it had captured Bagmouth last weekend. Ukraine has yet to confirm this. A bitter war has been raging around the eastern Ukrainian city for months – a war in pictures.

The Portuguese newspaper Publico writes about the Battle of Bakmut that it is an example of a war with no end in sight. Despite its low strategic importance, Russia and Ukraine have concentrated their military efforts on the city, as if the outcome of the conflict depended on it.

The eastern Ukrainian city has been the scene of heavy fighting for months and has been almost completely destroyed. Here the ill-fated Wagner mercenaries are outraged before informing their boss of Brigosh’s retreat and takeover by Russian troops. According to Moscow, Pakmut is under Russian control, but Ukraine has yet to confirm this.

Russia has in recent weeks made a last-ditch effort to capture the eastern Ukrainian city, which holds great symbolic importance for both sides, ahead of an expected counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces.
